this eponymous double album has a lot in common with the beatles "white album," which was also bloated, experimental and stylistically all over the map. the only thru-line on this album is that there is no thru line: there are numerous short instrumentals, folksy dylan-style numbers, sonic youth-inspired guitar freak outs, parquet courts-reminiscent rapid fire political gripes and a blink 182-esque ditty about falling in love with a woman who killed a puppy dog. this album doesn't take itself too seriously, either: there are songs about townspeople attacking a horse over an unknown equestrian secret, milk being stored in camel humps, a male's desire to be a female's kicking can, et cetera and so forth. whether all of this non-sense adds up to anything significant is up to the listener, but i can say for certain that it was damn fun to write and record.
